Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: baked adj., apple n.
Etymology: < baked adj. + apple n. In sense 2 so called with reference to the flavour of the berries (compare quot. 1792 at sense 2).With sense 1 compare the following earlier example of baken apple ( < baken adj. + apple n.):c1400 (c1378) W. Langland Piers Plowman (Laud 581) (1869) B. vi. l. 295 Benes and baken apples þei brouȝte in her lappes.
1. An apple which has been baked whole in its skin, typically cored and with the cavity filled with sugar, butter, and often dried fruit and spices.
