Etymology: < classical Latin necyomantīa evocation of the dead, a name for the part of the Odyssey (Book 11) describing Odysseus' visit to Hades < Hellenistic Greek νεκυομαντεία < νέκυς corpse, cognate with νεκρός corpse (see necro- comb. form) + μαντεία -mancy comb. form. Compare French †necyomance (1611 in Cotgrave). Compare earlier necromancy n.
Obsolete. rare.
