Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Nectria.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Nectria, genus name (E. Fries Summa Vegetabilium Scandinaviae (1849) 387) < Hellenistic Greek νηκτρίς , feminine form corresponding to νήκτης swimmer ( < ancient Greek νήχειν to swim (see necto- comb. form) + -της , suffix forming agent nouns) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix¹. Compare German Nectria (1884 or earlier).

Mycology.

A genus of ascomycete fungi (family Hypocreaceae) mostly having brightly-coloured (red or yellow) fruiting bodies and including a number of plant pathogens, esp. N. galligena, which causes apple canker; (also nectria) a fungus of this genus.
