A bank which operates on a national scale; spec. the central bank of a state (frequently in designations).In the United States (where the functions of a central bank have since 1913 been largely undertaken by the Federal Reserve System): spec. either the First Bank of the United States (1791–1811) or the Second Bank of the United States (1816–36).
