An independent political state formed from a people who share a common national identity (historically, culturally, or ethnically); (more generally) any independent political state.A nation-state may be distinguished from states which comprise two or more historically distinct peoples, or which comprise only part of a historical people. However, such distinctions are frequently problematic.
