Origin: A borrowing from German, combined with an English element. Etymons: German nastisch , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < German nast- (in nastisch (E. Strasburger Lehrb. der Bot. (ed. 6, 1904) I. ii. 221) < ancient Greek ναστός pressed together ( < νάσσειν to press, squeeze together, of uncertain origin + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + German -isch -ish suffix1) + -ic suffix. Compare earlier epinastic adj., hyponasty n.
Botany.
Of a plant movement: caused by an external influence that does not affect its direction.

1906 A. J. Ewart tr. W. Pfeffer Physiol. Plants III. 3 The curvatures produced by diffuse stimuli are termed ‘nastic’, while by epinasty, hyponasty, and paranasty, the sides are indicated which elongate on stimulation.
