Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Nasmyth.
Etymology: < the name of James Nasmyth (1808–90), Scottish engineer, who invented the steam hammer in 1839, and the telescope system c1842.
1. attributive and in the genitive. Designating a type of steam hammer or piledriver in which the falling weight is raised by steam pressure on a piston to which the weight is attached.
