Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German nicht wahr.
Etymology: < German nicht wahr ‘is it not?’, ‘isn't it?’ (mid 18th cent. or earlier) < nicht not (see nought pron.) + wahr true (see warlock n.1).
In interrogative contexts (esp. amongst German-speakers): ‘Is it not true?’; ‘Isn't that so?’ Cf. n'est-ce pas phr.
