单词 nazzard
释义

nazzardn.

Brit. /ˈnazəd/, U.S. /ˈnæzərd/
Forms: 1600s nazard, 1600s 1800s nazzard, 1900s– azzard, 1900s– nazart, 1900s– nazzart, 1900s– nazzet.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Etymon: nazold n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Apparently related to nazold n., although the nature of the relationship is unclear. Perhaps compare French nasarde flick on the nose (1542 in Middle French as nazarde , 1548 as nasarde ), mockery (1611) < nez nose (see Nez Perce n.) + -ard -ard suffix. The forms azzard , and azzardly for the corresponding adjective, probably result from metanalysis (see N n.).
Now English regional (northern).
An insignificant or mean person. Cf. nazold n.
