Etymology: Origin uncertain. Apparently related to nazzard n., although the nature of the relationship is unclear. With the ending -old , perhaps compare cuckold n.1The form azzald probably results from metanalysis (see N n.).

A silly or weak-minded person. Also: a bad-tempered person; a fretful or mischievous child. Cf. nazzard n.
