Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Urdu. Or (ii) a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu nāẓir; Persian nāẓir.
Etymology: < Urdu nāẓir or its etymon Persian nāẓir < Arabic nāẓir superintendent, inspector, administrator, officer in a judicial court, use as noun of active participle of Arabic naẓara to see, view, examine. With quot. 1909 compare Turkish nazır superintendent, also used in sense ‘Minister (in the Ottoman government)’ < Arabic nāẓir. Compare French nazir (1671).In Persia in the seventeenth and eighteenth cent. (compare quots. 1662, 1677, and 1687), the title (more fully nāẓir-i buyūt supervisor of the workshops) was applied to a high-ranking minister responsible for the supervision of the court workshops and much of the financial affairs of the royal domain. In later use, the Persian word refers to the steward or head domestic servant of an individual.
An official, superintendent, or steward in a Muslim country; the title of such a person. Also: †an Indian official in an Anglo-Indian court (obsolete).
