Etymology: < narrate v. + -ee suffix1, after French narrataire (R. Barthes 1966, in Communications 8 10).
Chiefly Literary Theory.
A person or character to whom a narrative is addressed. (Correlative to narrator.)A narratee may be a character within a narrative (such as the recipient of letters in an epistolary novel) or the intended reader (explicit or implied) of a narrative text.
