Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin nāris, nārēs.
Etymology: < classical Latin nāris nostril (usually in plural nārēs), cognate with nase n. Compare Anglo-Norman narie , narre nostril, nariz (plural), with reference to a bird (c1290), Old French nairre (mid 13th cent.) nostril, Middle French (Normandy) naris (plural) nostrils of a bird of prey (c1375). Compare also narel n.Compare the following passage, which may show later use in an extension of sense 2, although compare nares , plural of naris n.:1938 T. H. White Sword in Stone v. 70 ‘Nonsense,’ said the swan snappily, putting its head into the water and giving them a frown with its black nares. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (nēəɹ) /nɛə(r)/.
