Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nefastus.
Etymology: < classical Latin nefastus contrary to, or forbidden by, divine law < ne- not (see ne adv.1) + fastus lawful for the transaction of business ( < fās (see nefarious adj.) + -tus , suffix forming adjectives). Compare French néfaste having detrimental or unfortunate consequences (1831; mid 14th cent. in Middle French in phrase jours néfastes in sense ‘days when it is forbidden by religious law to attend to public affairs’). Compare earlier nefastous adj., nefarious adj.
