Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps inferred from the Scandinavian place-name element næs (in e.g. Lindesnæs , in southern Norway), ultimately from the same Germanic base as ness n.1Perhaps compare nase, in Middle English and early modern English place names, as Eduluenase (1235; 1546 as the Nayse; now Walton on the Naze, Essex), Nasing (1228; 1593 as Naysinge; now Nazeing, Essex). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (nēiz) /neɪz/.
