Etymology: < Anglo-Norman navire, navier and Middle French navire fleet, ship (mid 12th cent.; French navire ), shortened < Old French navirie ship (early 12th cent.; also in form navilie in sense ‘fleet’), ultimately < classical Latin nāvigium ship, voyage (see navy n. and adj.). Compare Old Occitan navili fleet (13th cent.), Italian naviglio ship, fleet (13th cent. in both senses as navilio).
Obsolete. rare.
Usually as a mass noun: ships, shipping. In quot. ?a1540 as a count noun: a ship.
