Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French narcolepsie.
Etymology: < French narcolepsie (J. Gélineau 1880, in Gaz. des hôpitaux 53 626/2) < narco- ( < ancient Greek νάρκη numbness (see narcosis n.) + -o- : see -o- connective) + -lepsie -lepsy comb. form. Compare slightly later narcolepsia n.
Medicine.
A sleep disorder, often of genetic origin, characterized by frequent brief episodes of sleep during the day and disturbed nocturnal sleep, often with cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic hallucinations. Also: untimely or excessive sleep associated with any of various other conditions (now disused). Also in extended use.
