Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish naranjilla.

Etymology: < American Spanish naranjilla (feminine), lit. ‘little orange’ (mid 17th cent.; 1618 in Spanish denoting a kind of decorative bead) < naranja (see orange n.¹) + -illa -illa suffix. Compare American Spanish naranjillo (masculine), the name of the plant (1803; also used as the name of the shrub Citronella mucronata, and thus in Cent. Dict. (1909) at narangillo).

A subshrub of the northern Andes, Solanum quitoense (family Solanaceae), which is cultivated in Central and South America and elsewhere for its bright orange-yellow fruit, and whose acid-green flesh is used for juice and for preserves. Also: the fruit of this plant.
