Naqibn.

Brit. /naˈkiːb/, /nəˈkiːb/, U.S. /nəˈkib/

Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic naqīb.
Etymology: < Arabic naqīb (plural nuqabā' ) chief of a tribe or other group or community, marshal of the sharifs (see note) < naqaba to scrutinize, verify. Compare German Nakib (1772 in the passage translated in quot. 1792), French nakîb (1773 in the French version of the passage translated in quot. 1792).In many contexts in both Arabic and English sources the word is short for Arabic naqīb al-ašrāf marshal of the sharifs (see shereef n.), an official who kept a register of the nobility and monitored their behaviour. Compare the following early example, in which Nakib Esres probably represents Arabic naqīb (al-)ašrāf:1668 P. Rycaut Present State Ottoman Empire (new ed.) i. iv. 13 This tumult was violently carried to the place of the Mufti, whom they forced with the..Nakib Esres, or Primate of the Mahometan Race, to accompany them.
In Arabic-speaking countries: a chief, headman, or leader, esp. of descendants of the prophet Muhammad (see etymological note). Also: a title borne by certain office-holders.
