Etymology: < Naqada (Arabic Naqādāh ), the name of a town and extensive archaeological site in the Egyptian governorate of Qena, on the western bank of the River Nile in Upper Egypt, first excavated by W. M. F. Petrie in 1894–5 (compare quot. 1897 at sense A.).The β. forms reflect the pronunciation of the Arabic voiceless uvular plosive /q/ as a voiced velar plosive /ɡ/ in Egyptian Arabic.
