Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French il n'y en a plus, il n'y a plus.
Etymology: Representing a (poorly apprehended) pronunciation of French il n'y en a plus or il n'y a plus there is no more, perhaps partly as a humorous alteration; adopted by British soldiers in France during the First World War (1914–18).
colloquial (originally Army slang). Now historical and rare.

Used to indicate that there is no more of something or that something or someone is gone; ‘finished!’ ‘goodbye!’ Cf. mafeesh int.In quot. 1989 used parodically. In quot. 2002 echoing quot. 1917.
