Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian napoletana.
Etymology: < Italian napoletana (1958 denoting a stove-top coffee pot; 1550 as le napolitane (plural) in a work title in musical sense), use as noun of feminine form of napoletano (see Neapolitan n.).With sense 1 compare Italian canzone alla napoletana (1545 in a work title in canzoni villanesche alla napolitana , plural), villanella alla napolitana (1567 in a work title), etc., and isolated borrowing of the Italian adverbial phrase alla napoletana ‘in the Neapolitan style’ in a musical context: 1573 G. 1. Early Music. Usually in form Napolitana. = villanella n. Cf. Neapolitan n. 2.The villanella is said to have originated in Naples, and thus when it became more widespread was sometimes known as the villanella alla Napoletana, sometimes giving rise to the understanding that the Napoletana was a particular type of villanella.
