Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French navet (late 12th cent. in Old French in form navez ) < nef rape plant (late 12th cent.; < classical Latin nāpus nape n.3) + -et -et suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin naveta (1349; < French). Compare navette n.1, navew n.In later use apparently showing a not fully naturalized reborrowing of the French word.
Obsolete.
The form of rape, Brassica napus var. napobrassica, (more fully †navet gentle) grown for its edible root. Cf. navette n.1, navew n.French navet is applied to the edible-rooted variety of rape, navette to the oilseed rape. Cotgrave defines navet as ‘the small Navew gentle, the least (and daintiest) kind of French Navew’.
