Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, as an initialism. Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: English navigation and ranging , navigation n., radar n.
Etymology: Either < the initial letters of navigation and ranging (after radar n.), or < nav- (in navigation n.) + -ar (in radar n.).
Aeronautics. Now historical.
A navigational radar system in which the positions of aircraft near an airport are determined by ground radar and then transmitted to pilots in the vicinity.

1969 S. H. Dodington in M. Kayton & W. Fried Avionics Navigation Systems v. 203 Navar. Proposal in 1946 for rho-theta navigation and reporting... Experimental model built 1946-49. No further development, but made substantial contribution to DME and Tacon.
