Etymology: < nautical adj. + almanac n.
A yearbook containing astronomical information for navigators and astronomers, in particular the predicted positions of celestial objects at various dates and times in the year.Originally in the title of the British Nautical Almanac and Astronomical Ephemeris, which began publication in 1766 for the year 1767. The American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac was first published in 1852 for the year 1855. In 1958 (for the year 1960) the British and American almanacs were unified, with identical content, and the principal British almanac took the title of Astronomical Ephemeris, so that Nautical Almanac could be used for the separate almanac published for marine navigation. In 1981 the titles of the principal British and American almanacs were changed to Astronomical Almanac. Nautical Almanac occurs in the titles of other works that contain tidal information for use in limited areas. Separate nautical almanacs for marine navigation were at first published from parts of the parent Nautical Almanac with some additional material. The American Nautical Almanac was published in this way from 1879 for 1880; in Britain the Nautical Almanac abridged for the Use of Seamen began publication in 1902 for 1905.
