Etymology: < Nantgarw, the name of a village in Glamorgan, South Wales, where this porcelain was manufactured.The Nantgarw pottery was founded in 1813 by porcelain maker and painter William Billingsley (1758–1828: see quot. 1891 at sense B.) and his son-in-law Samuel Walker, who subsequently went into partnership with the porcelain painter William Weston Young (1776–1847: see quot. 1820 at sense A.). Porcelain manufacture continued in Nantgarw (except for a period of production in Swansea 1814–16) until 1820, when Billingsley and Walker left the concern, though existing unfinished stock was decorated at the pottery until it was sold in 1822.
