Etymology: < Nabal (Hebrew Nāḇāl ), the name of a wealthy inhabitant of Maon who foolishly refused hospitality to David's men (1 Samuel 25:3) < nāḇāl a disgraceful, impious, or villainous person < nāḇal to be foolish, act foolishly: compare nabalite n.
Chiefly Scottish. Now rare.
