Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch naartjie.
Etymology: < South African Dutch naartjie (Afrikaans naartjie) < Tamil nārattai orange tree < nāram citrus.In quots. 1790, 1796 via French naretye (1790), naretje (1795) respectively. The Afrikaans pronunciation of the second syllable is now generally /ki/; the English pronunciation reflects the older Afrikaans pronunciation with a palatal plosive, /ci/.

A loose-skinned variety of tangerine or mandarin orange. Also: the tree bearing this fruit, Citrus reticulata.
