Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French méridienne.
Etymology: < French méridienne (c1750 in this sense; apparently developed from its earlier sense ‘siesta, midday rest’: see meridian n.).Compare the following earlier example of an unassimilated borrowing of the French word:1904 E. Singleton French & Eng. Furnit. 378 The new sofas were called Méridienne and canapé pommier.
A sofa designed for use as a daybed; (chiefly spec.) an asymmetrically constructed sofa of a type popular in France during the First and Second Empires.
