单词 myrcene
释义

myrcenen.

Brit. /ˈməːsiːn/, U.S. /ˈmərˌsin/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Myrcia , -ene comb. form.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Myrcia (see note), former genus name of the (Caribbean) bayberry, Pimenta racemosa (formerly P. acris) + -ene comb. form.According to J. Lindley ( Collectanea Botanica (1821) sub t. 19), the name Myrcia was used by Solander (a1782 in manuscripts) for the allspice, Pimenta dioica; it was subsequently revived as a genus name by de Candolle in 1827. According to de Candolle ( Dict. classique d'hist. nat. (1827) XI. s.v. Myrtées) Myrcia represents ‘l'un des anciens noms du Myrte’, but no corresponding word is recorded in Latin or Greek. A possible connection is with classical Latin Murcia , Hellenistic Greek Μουρκία , the name of a goddess, said by the ancients to derive from the word for myrtle (classical Latin myrtus , ancient Greek μύρτος ). Another possibility is that Myrcia represents an alteration of Myrica (see myrica n.), although this denotes the tamarisk.
