Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin myōps.
Etymology: < classical Latin myōps a short-sighted person (in Aulus Gellius as an unassimilated Greek loanword) < ancient Greek μύωψ half-closing the eyes, short-sighted < μύειν to shut the eyes (see mystery n.1) + -ωψ -ops comb. form). Compare earlier myope n., myopia n.The Latin word occurs in an English context in the following source (a translation of a dictionary written in Latin):1684 tr. S. Blankaart Physical Dict. 204 Myops is one that is Purblind.
Now rare.
