Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin myopia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin myopia (10th cent. in a translation of the Byzantine Greek medical writer Paulus Aegineta (7th cent.)) < Byzantine Greek μυωπία (see note) < ancient Greek μύωπ- , μύωψ myops n. + -ία -ia suffix1. Compare French myopie (1650 in sense 1, 1801 in sense 2).Byzantine Greek μυωπία is recorded in a title, περὶ μυωπίας, in Aëtius (6th cent.); Galen uses Hellenistic Greek μυωπίασις in the sense ‘short sightedness’.
