Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Portuguese moçutaíba, mocitaíba.
Etymology: < Brazilian Portuguese moçutaíba, variant of mocitaíba (1587 as mucetaíba; 1663 as mocetayba) < Tupi mositaʔïu̯a. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mɒstăˌī·bă) /mʌstəˈiːbə/.
Obsolete.
A close-grained Brazilian wood formerly used for making knife handles, etc., obtained from the rainforest tree Swartzia crocea (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)).
