Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese muçurana.
Etymology: < Portuguese muçurana (1913; 1587 in sense ‘rope for binding prisoners’; the transferred sense probably arises from the fact that the mussurana immobilizes its prey by winding its coils around it) < Tupi moçu'rana mussurana < moçu kind of eel-like fish + rana resembling.
A large black colubrid snake of tropical America, Clelia clelia, which feeds on other snakes, being immune to their venom.
