Forms: Middle English makerer (transmission error), Middle English nacornere, Middle English nakerner, Middle English nakirrer, Middle English nakorer, Middle English 1900s– nakerer. N.E.D. (1906) also records a form Middle English nakarer.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French nakerer ; naker n.1, -er suffix1.
Etymology: Either < Anglo-Norman nakerer (early 14th cent.; < naker (see naker n.1) + -er -er suffix2; compare Old French naquareur (1319)), or independently < naker n.1 + -er suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin nakerarus (1338). Compare also naker v.The word occurs as a surname from the early 14th cent., although it is uncertain whether such instances should be taken as reflecting the Anglo-Norman or the Middle English word. The following example is similarly ambiguous:1325 Patent Roll, 19 Edward II 20 July (P.R.O.: C 66/163) m. 31 Johannes de Melf Nakerer.
