Origin: Partly a borrowing from Tamil. Partly a borrowing from Malayalam. Etymons: Tamil nāyakaṉ; Malayalam nāyakaṉ.
Etymology: Partly < Tamil nāyakaṉ, and partly < Malayalam nāyakaṉ, both < Sanskrit nāyaka guide, leader, chief < nī- to lead. Compare Nair n. and adj.In early use via forms in other European languages, e.g. Italian naic (1560 in the passage translated in quot. 1588 at sense 1), Dutch nayque (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 1598 at sense 1), French naique (early 17th cent. or earlier; 1665 in the passage translated in quot. 1687 at sense 1). Subsequently probably via Portuguese nayque (c1538 or earlier; also attested as naique (1548 or earlier)). Compare also Spanish naygue (1604 or earlier).
