Etymology: < scientific Latin Myxomycetes (H. F. Link Handb. zur Erkennung der Gewächse (1833) III. 405) < myxo- myxo- comb. form + mycetes mycetes n.² Compare German Myxomyceten (1858 or earlier), French myxomycètes (1873).The name Myxomycetes was also used earlier in 1833 by C. F. W. Wallroth ( Flora Cryptogamica Germaniae II. 333), but his group corresponded less closely with the one that was later recognized. Compare Myxogastres n.

Biology.

A taxon (now usually regarded as a class) comprising the majority of plasmodial slime moulds, i.e. those whose growth stage is a free-living, motile, multinucleate mass of protoplasm saprophytic on decaying wood and vegetation. With plural agreement (also myxomycetes): members of this taxon collectively.The term is sometimes loosely applied also to other slime moulds; cf.
