Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin myxoma.
Etymology: < scientific Latin myxoma (R. Virchow 1857, in Arch. f. Pathol. Anat. u. Physiol. 11 286) < myxo- myxo- comb. form + -oma -oma comb. form. Compare German Myxom (R. Virchow 1857, in Arch. f. Pathol. Anat. u. Physiol. 11 287), French myxome (1867).
Pathology and Veterinary Medicine.
1. Originally: any tumour having a mucoid stroma. Later: spec. a usually benign tumour consisting of scattered stellate or spindle cells in abundant mucoid stroma, probably originating from primitive mesenchymal cells, which may occur at a variety of sites and is the most common primary tumour of the heart.

Compounds
