Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: myxo- comb. form, bacterium n.
Etymology: < myxo- comb. form + bacterium n., after scientific Latin Myxobacteriaceae, family name (R. Thaxter 1892, in Bot. Gaz. 17 390). Compare German Myxobakterie (1898 or earlier). Compare also earlier myxobacter n.
Microbiology.
Any member of the order Myxococcales (also called Myxobacterales), comprising rod-shaped, motile, slime-secreting bacteria that are capable of forming fruiting bodies containing resting cells, and which are mainly soil-inhabiting saprophytes and predators of other microorganisms.
