Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Myoctonin.

Etymology: < German Myoctonin (G. Dragendorff & H. Spohn 1884, in Pharmaceut. Zeitschr. f. Russland 23 377) < ancient Greek μυοκτόνος mouse-killing (see myoctonic adj., referring to a different substance) + German -in -ine suffix⁵, probably after scientific Latin Aconitum myoctonum (H. G. L. Reichenbach Übersicht der Gattung Aconitum (1819); compare mouse-bane n. at mouse n. Compounds 2c), alternative name of Aconitum lycoctonum. Compare earlier lycoctonine n.

Chemistry.

A poisonous diterpenoid alkaloid (perhaps C₇₂H₈₄N₄O₂₀), obtained from the wolfsbane Aconitum lycoctonum.
