Etymology: < post-classical Latin myloglossus (J. Riolanus Encheiridion Anat. (1649) v. xv. 340, the passage translated in quot. 1657) < ancient Greek μύλη , μύλος mill, millstone, molar (see meal n.¹) + γλῶσσα (see gloss n.¹). Compare mylohyoideus n. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (məiloglǫ·sɒ̆s) /maɪləʊˈɡlɒsəs/.

Anatomy. Obsolete.

A muscle described as connecting the base of the tongue to the mandible; spec. (a) a part of the mylohyoid muscle; (b) an anatomical variant of the styloglossus muscle.
