Etymology: < scientific Latin Mylodon (R. Owen: see quot. 1839) < ancient Greek μύλη , μύλος mill, millstone, molar (see meal n.¹) + scientific Latin -odon -odon comb. form.

Palaeontology.

A genus of giant ground sloths with more or less cylindrical teeth (family Mylodontidae), known from fossil remains in Pleistocene deposits chiefly found in South America; (also mylodon) a sloth of this genus.
