Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: myelo- comb. form, -poiesis comb. form.
Etymology: < myelo- comb. form + -poiesis comb. form, probably after German Myelopoëse (O. Naegeli Blutkrankheiten u. Blutdiagnostik (1908) 133). Compare also Byzantine Greek μυελοποιός (adjective) making marrow (12th cent.).
Physiology and Medicine.
The formation and development of bone marrow cells, or of blood cells derived from these (haematopoiesis); spec. the formation and development of granulocytes.
