Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: myelo- comb. form, Greek πλάξ.
Etymology: < myelo- comb. form + ancient Greek πλάξ flat plate, tablet (see placo- comb. form), after French myéloplaxe (C. Robin, 1855 or earlier).
Physiology. disused.
A multinucleated giant cell, esp. one found in bone or bone marrow; spec. an osteoclast.
