Spina bifida in which the tissue of the spinal cord and its surrounding membranes (the meninges) protrudes through the cleft in the spine, forming a rounded swelling of the skin usually slightly above the base of the spine; the tissue so protruding. Also called meningomyelocele. Cf. myelocele n. 1.
