Any of several small, solitary East Asian deer of the genus Moschus (the sole extant genus of the family Moschidae), having tusks but no antlers, the male having a sac in the abdomen that secretes musk; esp. M. moschiferus. Formerly also: †a chevrotain (mouse deer).The Linnaean genus Moschus ( Systema Naturæ, ed. 6, 1748) included not only the true musk deer but also chevrotains, the males of which similarly have small tusks. Chevrotains were later separated into the genus Tragulus (now the family Tragulidae).
