Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin musion-, musio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin musion-, musio cat (a636 in Isidore; from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin mūs mouse n. + -iō -ion suffix1.The animal was said to be so called because it was an enemy to mice (see quot. 15722, which translates Isidore). With the use of the cat as a heraldic charge compare the canting arms of the Dutch family of Muyser which bear a cat.
Heraldry. Now historical.
