Dissolution or destruction of the myelin sheath of nerve fibres; spec. demyelination of the pons or other areas of the brain, typically associated with chronic alcoholism, electrolyte imbalance (esp. hyponatraemia and its correction), and liver transplantation (chiefly in central pontine myelinolysis).

The term central pontine myelinolysis was chosen because it denotes both the specific anatomic localization of this disease and the remarkable unsystematic dissolution of medullated fibers.
