Etymology: < myco- comb. form + ancient Greek ῥίζα root (see rhizo- comb. form; compare coleorhiza n., hydrorhiza n. at hydro- comb. form 7, pileorhiza n.), after German Mycorhiza (A. B. Frank 1885, in Ber. der Deutsch. Bot. Ges. 3 129; now Mykorrhiza).
Botany.
A plant root growing in close association with a fungus; a fungus growing on or in a plant root; the (usually symbiotic) relationship between such roots and fungi.
