Etymology: < post-classical Latin mysticetus (in scientific Latin in the name Balaena mysticetus (Linnaeus 1758)) < Greek μυστίκητος (a transmission error in old editions (e.g. 1497, 1531) of Aristotle Historia Animalium 519^a23, where modern editions read ὁ μῦς τὸ κῆτος, ‘the “mouse”, i.e. the whale so called’).The identity of the animal referred to by Aristotle has not been determined. In old Latin translations μυστίκητος was rendered musculus piscis and was thus associated with the animal so named by Pliny (‘the whale's guide’).

A whale of the suborder Mysticeti of baleen or whalebone whales; spec. the Greenland right whale or bowhead, Balaena mysticetus.
